How Installation Works
When an existing system reaches the end of its life, or a new home needs a septic system for the first time, installation starts with the property itself — not a one-size-fits-all layout. Soil across Iredell, Catawba, and the surrounding Piedmont counties ranges from sandy loam to dense clay, and that difference determines drain field sizing and whether a conventional gravity system is the right fit.
System Types
Not every property can support the same septic system. Jared works directly with your county's environmental health department or a private soil scientist to best fit your needs.
Wastewater flows from the tank into a distribution box, or is serial-fed directly, out to a drain field, where the surrounding soil provides natural treatment. It's the simpler, more affordable option, and the right fit whenever your soil, lot size, and setbacks allow it.
An Aerobic Treatment Unit actively aerates and treats wastewater to a higher standard before it reaches the drain field — powered by a control panel and alarm system. It opens up lots that can't support a conventional system: poor-draining clay, steep grades, high water tables, or tight setbacks.
When your drain field sits uphill from the tank, your lot doesn't allow a gravity-fed layout, or your soil needs controlled dosing to perform long-term, a pump delivers effluent from a dosing tank to the field in timed intervals — often through a low-pressure pipe (LPP) layout for even distribution. This can be added to either a conventional or ATU system when your site calls for it.

Soil. A percolation (perc) test measures how well your soil absorbs water, which directly sets your drain field size — sandy loam drains faster and needs less field than dense Piedmont clay.
Lot size & setbacks. North Carolina code sets minimum distances from your septic system to wells, property lines, waterways, and structures. Smaller or oddly-shaped lots sometimes require an ATU to meet setbacks a conventional field can't.
Household size. Tank and drain field sizing in North Carolina is based on bedroom count, so a system for a 3-bedroom home is sized differently than one for a 5-bedroom home.
County permit. Every installation requires an on-site wastewater permit from your county health department before work begins — Semper Septic prepares and submits that application as part of the design process.
